GENIUS AND CREATIVITY

I found my inspiration and the foundation of my work in the creations of Antonio de Torres; afterwards I tried as best as I could to go on solo, along a path I scouted as I made my way through it.

There was no such thing as a path already laid out, there was just the eagerness to keep going.

As Antonio Machado put it: “Wayfarer, there is no path: you make your own as you go”. ”.

Cav. marco Sellitto

Cav Marco Sellitto
Welcome!

“At the age of three he was enthralled by the notes of classical music coming from a radio. Much later came the passion for the guitar but no instrument that he tried lived up to his expectations. And this is how Marco Sellitto, a Neapolitan electroacoustic engineer with a degree from Houston University in Texas, and three more collected over the years, modifying at first and later on creating his own instruments, finally came to be an accomplished luthier. As a luthier he has created real works of art using different wood species, each with their individual sounds, each of which is one of a kind, with a different name. “La Dolorosa” is guitar number zero. EXELLENCE

THE VALUE OF TRADITION:

Tradition is at the core of my roots, of my personal history. It is a rich past the knowledge of which cannot be scaled down to sheer notions, but becomes nourishment and lifeblood of my way of being, of feeling and of living the present.
THE MATERIALS

He favours woods whose acoustic properties he selects very punctiliously. This is the only evaluation parameter that the Maestro uses to select the materials he will use to manufacture his instruments.

UNIQUENESS

Wood, and the various species of it used in making Sellitto guitars, along with a project, contribute to the realization of those timbre nuances and, ultimately, to the “character” of each guitar, making each instrument one of a kind ... From this comes the absolute uniqueness of each Sellitto guitar. As far as materials go, wood is the only protagonist, with no addition of non-wooden materials (except for the tuning pegs, the frets, the bridge and capo bones). The sound, according to qualitative and quantitative parameters, is the one and only objective of this luthier’s works.

INNOVATIONS
As a luthier, he did not limit himself to manufacturing guitars, but carried out research in three specific areas that led to the following innovations: • new development of a soundboard bracing which, for the first time, does not require master chains • a new concept of a sounding board • a special treatment of the woods to be used in the construction of his instruments (called by this sound engineer the “TESLA treatment” in honour of the great Serbian scientist). He also elaborated a new varnish whose formula he developed after having studied for a long time those used by the Cremonese violin making luthiers (by such great masters as Amati, Guarneri and, in particular, Stradivari).

ACOUSTICS

His sensibility to sound allowed him to innovate by “interpreting” and analyzing all the structural elements, creating an instrument with an innovative design, thanks to which all his guitars bear the imprint of continuity with the classical tradition and, at the same time, of the innovations he brought about thanks to a tireless passion for sound and his know-how as an engineer in the field of acoustics.

THE PROJECT

What is of paramount importance in the attainment of the optimal qualitative and quantitative acoustic performances of a musical instrument is undoubtedly the project that is at its base. Without a sound project, planned in each and every one of its components, and obsessively cared for and fine-tuned down to the minutest details, the acoustic results of a musical instrument would not only be unpredictable, but also be the outcome of chance... and in most cases... disappointing...

DISTORTION
When from a distance the sound of a guitar can be perfectly heard in its highest quality, sharpness and, above all, richness of timbre, we are in the presence of a sound signal characterized by low distortion. Conversely, instruments that sound less and less clearly as the distance increases, are instruments characterized by a high distortion of sound. In other words: distortion and clarity are inversely proportional.

THE WORLD OF STRINGS

A classical guitar is first of all a resonance box that, by vibrating, amplifies the sounds coming from each individual string: this is the driver that causes the instrument to vibrate through the bridge, and emerge thanks to the virtuosity of the guitarist. Thus the strings act as “acoustic impedance adapters” between the musician and the instrument.
